Baron Friedrich Wilhelm Gerhard Augustin von Steuben arrived in Valley Forge on February 23, 1778. He was given, according to his letter of 1779 to Germany, wagons, sleighs, and five negroes as grooms and drivers. He claimed he had only brought along a valet and a cook; therefore, he managed to get supplies and food along with two Englishmen as servants. His only reward, according to Washington Irving, was gaining military glory, even as he was working with a “rag tag” army on what Washington biographer Irving calls the “rude fighting grounds” of the Colonies. Von Steuben was forty-eight years old when he arrived in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. This is his story.
