General Washington’s travels in New Jersey spawned legends as curious as modern sightings of Elvis Presley after his death. Legendary and imagined plots became a threat to the General and caused the creation of the Commander in Chief Guards near the beginning of the war. This unit, in their red vests and leather helmets, remains a small mystery. After participating in major battles and after guarding the General, their records assiduously preserved by Major Gibbs were destroyed by fire in 1815. What is left of accounts indicates a cadre of soldiers who traveled with the General and his party numbering twenty to fifty depending on area and need. Early in their existence some of the Commander in Chief Guards were involved in mutinous activities, including plots to kidnap, kill, or mutiny against Washington.
