The modern images of George and Martha Washington that are displayed in media, museums, and exhibitions reflect a stereotypical picture of a white-haired father of our country with a stare that was looking far into the distance next to a little old lady in a mop cap. What was he like with this family, or in the field, or dealing with friends and neighbors and serving staff and “enslaved people” at Mount Vernon plantation? The pictures and paintings do not match the man. His picture in the modern world is a product of years of study and, in many cases, misunderstanding, and lack of primary sources. But what was his private life on the plantation really like?
