Overview
A Hackettstown Free Public Library card is free for anyone who lives, works, pays property taxes, or goes to school within the boundaries of the Hackettstown municipality, with some exceptions. Registration can be done online or in-person. Online authentication is done automatically if you click on the links below.
If the online system prompts you to come to the library or you just want to register in-person, please come to the front desk during our hours of operation. Proof of residency or property ownership is required for in-person registration. Present a driver’s license, rental lease, utility bill, bank statement, or government issued ID showing a Hackettstown address. The ID must not be expired.
All children under the age of 18 must have parental endorsement of their library borrowing cards. Children ages four (4) and up are eligible to receive their own library card.
Courtesy cards can be issued to anyone employed by a Hackettstown business and to students of the Hackettstown school system and Centenary University provided that the applicant does NOT live in the service area of any of our Open Borrowing partners. The applicant also must provide verification of employment or a student ID.
Borrowing Partners
Main Library Alliance Member
Since 2016, the Hackettstown Free Public Library has been a proud member of the Main Library Alliance, a nonprofit network of over 50 public libraries located in Essex, Hunterdon, Morris, Somerset, Union, and Warren Counties. Main’s mission is to lead and encourage collaboration, resource sharing, staff development and innovation by providing high-quality, cost-effective shared services to member libraries for their communities, fostering the exchange of ideas and experiences within our network. As a member of Main, our patrons have access to over 3.1 million physical and digital items, including but not limited to eBooks, audiobooks, movies, music, games, and of course, books. Our library also participates in the NJ Open Borrowing program through Main, enabling patrons to borrow materials in-person from participating libraries outside the Main service area. Main maintains our libraries’ computer systems and hosts a system-wide mobile app for patrons. Main’s commitment to cutting-edge technology inspires our patrons to “Listen, Read and Learn,” enriching their lives. The partnership and cooperation of Main’s member libraries and supporters make this all possible.
Hackettstown residents can request items from any one of the Main Library Alliance member libraries to be sent to Hackettstown for pickup, or they can go to any Main library to check out items. The closest four Main libraries to Hackettstown are in Independence, Mount Olive, Washington Township, and Chester.
Open Borrowing
The Library participates in Open Borrowing with over 75 New Jersey libraries in such counties as Passaic, Sussex, and Middlesex. Hackettstown Free Public Library cardholders can borrow items in-person from these libraries as long as they are a patron in good standing. See the website for more details: www.openborrowing.org.
Interlibrary Loan (ILL)
The Library participates in Interlibrary Loan services via JerseyCat. The JerseyCat catalog includes the collections of many of New Jersey’s public libraries, colleges, and schools. Please search the Hackettstown Public Library Catalog before requesting items through JerseyCat. JerseyCat should only be used if the items that you are looking for are not found in the Main Catalog. Click here for more details.
Library Card Boundaries
A Hackettstown mailing address does not necessarily designate residence within Hackettstown municipal boundaries. If you are unsure, call the library to verify your library district, check your street address on our Hackettstown Street List, or see below for an interactive map of our service area. If you live in any of the shaded areas, the Hackettstown Free Public Library is NOT your home library. For example, if you live in Mansfield or Independence, your free library would be the Warren County Library, even though your mailing address is Hackettstown.
Library App

Download the app here from the Apple App and Google Play stores. You can also search “Main Library Alliance” in your app store. Once downloaded, the app will guide you through a one-time login, then take you directly to the Hackettstown Library home screen.
If you have any questions, feel free to call the library at (908) 852-4936 or email info@hackettstownlibrary.org or contact SOLUS directly at support@sol.us.
