Although Antietam is one of the most famous battles of the Civil War, one part of the battlefield has been largely overlooked, the southern, or lower, portion. This is where the Union 9th Corps launched the last attack of the day, and where General A.P. Hill’s Division arrived to counterattack.
This talk will explore the last attacks and the history of this neglected part of the battlefield. We will also learn about the most recent preservation efforts here.
Robert M. (Bert) Dunkerly is the author of “The Lower Battlefield of Antietam.” He has worked at fourteen historic sites, written over a dozen books, and numerous scholarly articles. He is a past President of the Richmond Civil War Round Table, and serves on the Preservation Commission for the American Revolution Round Table-Richmond. Dunkerly is currently a Park Ranger at Richmond National Battlefield Park. He was also a Park Ranger at Morristown, NJ, Washington’s Headquarters. He also has appeared on C-Span Book TV.
This program is presented on Zoom as a public service by the North Jersey Civil War Round Table.
