SUMMARY:General Washington: Sickness\, Inoculation\, and the Wounded
DESCRIPTION:Despite the war\, most deaths in the middle to latter parts of the eighteenth century were caused by diseases and infant mortality. Medicine\, although advanced in the larger settlements of the colonies\, was still in its infancy and was nonexistent in rural areas. Fever\, dysentery\, and smallpox were the biggest killers. When the Revolutionary War began\, the diseases did not disappear but increased because of military living conditions and poor sanitation. The winter encampments had the worst of the conditions because lack of food and warmth\, coupled with the threat of frostbite\, and the frequency of disease. George Washington’s smallpox inoculations were only part of the battle against diseases causing death. \nThis event is being held at Riverwalk Village at House of the Good Shepherd and on Zoom. \nZoom details will be emailed out to registrants on the day of the program.
