SUMMARY:General Baron Friedrich Wilhelm Gerhard von Steuben: Organizing the Continental Army
DESCRIPTION:Baron Friedrich Wilhelm Gerhard Augustin von Steuben arrived in Valley Forge on February 23\, 1778. He was given\, according to his letter of 1779 to Germany\, wagons\, sleighs\, and five negroes as grooms and drivers. He claimed he had only brought along a valet and a cook; therefore\, he managed to get supplies and food along with two Englishmen as servants. His only reward\, according to Washington Irving\, was gaining military glory\, even as he was working with a “rag tag” army on what Washington biographer Irving calls the “rude fighting grounds” of the Colonies. Von Steuben was forty-eight years old when he arrived in Portsmouth\, New Hampshire. SUMMARY:The Wyoming Valley Massacre and the Hard Winter
DESCRIPTION:The Wyoming Valley Massacre in Pennsylvania\, and the Cherry Valley atrocities in New York State saw the Six Nations (Iroquois) and the British massacre 360 Americans and capture women and children. Both sides felt it necessary to take revenge for earlier attacks. The description of the Battle of Wyoming has since grown into a tale of slaughter of the Iroquois; however\, there was more to the story. It was promulgated by the press at the time that printed exaggerated local gossip based on rumors. A year later the Continental Army in New Jersey wintered in Morristown for the Awful\, Famous Hard Winter of 1780. SUMMARY:Turning Point and Martyrdom: Connecticut Farms and Springfield
DESCRIPTION:This was the beginning of the end of combat in New Jersey but not without cost. Hannah Caldwell was shot through the window of the Presbyterian parsonage by a red coated soldier; her husband the Reverend James Caldwell was murdered by a Continental soldier\, creating a 250-year-old “cold case.” All of this took place while Washington watched from a hill in Millburn\, New Jersey. \nThis event is being held at Riverwalk Village at House of the Good Shepherd and on Zoom.  \nZoom details will be emailed out to registrants on the day of the program.

SUMMARY:Washington's Commander in Chief Guards
DESCRIPTION:General Washington’s travels in New Jersey spawned legends as curious as modern sightings of Elvis Presley after his death. Legendary and imagined plots became a threat to the General and caused the creation of the Commander in Chief Guards near the beginning of the war. This unit\, in their red vests and leather helmets\, remains a small mystery. After participating in major battles and after guarding the General\, their records assiduously preserved by Major Gibbs were destroyed by fire in 1815. What is left of accounts indicates a cadre of soldiers who traveled with the General and his party numbering twenty to fifty depending on area and need. Early in their existence some of the Commander in Chief Guards were involved in mutinous activities\, including plots to kidnap\, kill\, or mutiny against Washington. \nThis event is being held at Riverwalk Village at House of the Good Shepherd and on Zoom.  \nZoom details will be emailed out to registrants on the day of the program.

SUMMARY:George Washington's Traveling Military Family
DESCRIPTION:General Washington traveled with aides\, his wife\, her two adult children\, assorted guests\, and a full retinue of housekeeping staff. The socials\, or entertainments\, for the officers and their wives\nduring the travels in addition to the daily needs in rented and hastily occupied quarters\, required a full housekeeping staff. As the family and friends traveled\, there was always a threat of attack\,\nplots of kidnapping and assassination\, and traitors from within. The General stopped at over two hundred different homes during the war years\, sixty-three of them in New Jersey and the best\ncount of homes and taverns where he set up temporary household was thirty-five more different stops. His travel mates included thirty to fifty military bodyguards\, his personal aide\, and his\nwife. During the course of the war\, entertainment and daily housekeeping demanded two cooks\, a laundress\, and a housekeeper. The number of other servants varied\, including servants of all\ntypes\, white and enslaved. SUMMARY:General Washington: Sickness\, Inoculation\, and the Wounded
DESCRIPTION:Despite the war\, most deaths in the middle to latter parts of the eighteenth century were caused by diseases and infant mortality. Medicine\, although advanced in the larger settlements of the colonies\, was still in its infancy and was nonexistent in rural areas. Fever\, dysentery\, and smallpox were the biggest killers. When the Revolutionary War began\, the diseases did not disappear but increased because of military living conditions and poor sanitation. The winter encampments had the worst of the conditions because lack of food and warmth\, coupled with the threat of frostbite\, and the frequency of disease. DESCRIPTION:The modern images of George and Martha Washington that are displayed in media\, museums\, and exhibitions reflect a stereotypical picture of a white-haired father of our country with a stare that was looking far into the distance next to a little old lady in a mop cap. What was he like with this family\, or in the field\, or dealing with friends and neighbors and serving staff and “enslaved people” at Mount Vernon plantation? The pictures and paintings do not match the man. His picture in the modern world is a product of years of study and\, in many cases\, misunderstanding\, and lack of primary sources.
